Training camps

Athletics

Japan national short distance athletics team Training camps prior to the Olympic Games and World Championships

The Japan national athletics team has held its training camp here annually since the facility opened. Located at an altitude of 1,000m, it provides the perfect environment for high-altitude training. Many athletes have achieved good results, and recently, the relay team won a medal. The athletes also teach at the summer vacation athletics class organized by Yamanashi Sports Association. This has a great influence on the local elementary and junior high school children, and gives them dreams for the future.

Football

Cameroon national football team

This facility was used as a soccer football camp location during the FIFA World Cup. Many countries came to inspect the facility due to the good condition of the pitch, the stunning location, with Japan’s highest mountain Mt. Fuji in the background, and its proximity to the match venue. Of these, it was decided that it would host the Cameroon team. The facility was greatly invigorated, with children who play soccer football and men and women of all ages gathering to watch the professional players.

The Cameroon national football team held a training camp at Kunugidaira Sports Park Football Ground prior to the 2002 FIFA World Cup, hosted by Japan and South Korea. They chose this ground because of its proximity to Tokyo, and because the players could train at a high altitude. The team held soccer classes for the local youths which raised interest in sports and soccer, and led to the establishment of elementary, junior and senior high school soccer club teams in the town. They also had a large, invigorating effect on the volleyball teams consisting of housewives and junior and senior high school students.

The venue was selected as a location for a training camp prior to the All Japan championships. A typhoon had brought bad weather which lasted until the previous week, making training at facilities in neighboring prefectures difficult. Lake Kawaguchiko was chosen because it was in good condition. Students who come from the area participated in the week-long camp, which was a good training experience for the athletes.
